The Verkhovna Rada supported the proposal of President Volodymyr Zelensky and extended martial law in Ukraine for another 90 days. That is, martial law will last until August 25.
The people's deputies adopted the corresponding decision at a meeting on May 22. This was reported by Channel 24.
The day before, President Volodymyr Zelensky made a corresponding proposal to Parliament. Note that prior to this, the Verkhovna Rada twice extended martial law for 30 days.
Why exactly for 90 days
People's deputy from the Servant of the People party Fyodor Venislavsky explained that there are no guarantees that hostilities will end in the next 30 days. The reason for this is at least the fact that the counter-offensive takes more time than the defense. Therefore, as the people's deputy noted, you need to be aware that a month will not be enough for this and you will have to continue martial law again.
In addition, such a decision has a legal basis, because martial law implies the restriction of certain human rights and freedoms. Therefore, after each extension, the representatives of Ukraine in the UN must inform the organization about it. That is, monthly. However, when this decision is made, Ukrainian diplomats will report to the UN only 1 time.
However, martial law can be canceled ahead of schedule if hostilities cease before August 25.
