On February 24, the Verkhovna Rada denounced all agreements with Russia regarding the Sea of Azov. In particular, we are talking about cooperation in the use of the sea and the Kerch Strait, as well as another agreement.
Both bills were supported by more than 300 people's deputies. This was announced by the People's Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
What agreements were broken
- №0182 – Agreement between Ukraine and Russia on cooperation in the use of the Azov sea and the Kerch Strait;
- №0183 – withdrawal from the Agreement on the Establishment of the Black Sea Group of Naval Cooperation. This group was created in early 2001, but after the occupation of Crimea by Russia, it actually ceased to exist.The agreement on cooperation in the use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait was signed on December 24, 2003 in Kerch. It entered into force on April 23, 2004.
- The agreement provided that the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait were “internal waters of Ukraine and Russia”;
- The Sea of Azov was delimited by the state border line ;
- All issues related to the water area of the strait must be resolved by both parties;
- The agreement provided for freedom of navigation for Ukrainian and Russian ships operated for non-commercial purposes;
- Ukraine and Russia they were supposed to cooperate in various areas that concerned the water area.
Obviously, the treaty lost all meaning when Russia launched a full-scale war against Ukraine. Moreover, in the Russian Maritime Doctrine of July 31, 2022, there is no clause at all on the international legal regulation of the use of the Kerch Strait. The aggressor state brazenly considers the strait as a “sole” maritime space.
