Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain will lose control of Barbados. The country used to be a colony, now it is an independent state within the Commonwealth, led by London. This was stated by the Governor General of Barbados Sandra Mason at the opening of the autumn session of the local parliament, reports the portal Barbados Today.
“The time has come to completely leave our colonial past behind. The people of Barbados need their own head of state. Barbados will take the next logical step towards full sovereignty and become a republic by the 55th anniversary of our independence, ”Mason said. Thus, the island will officially become a republic in 2021.
In addition, the Governor-General recalled that the parliamentarians plan to consider bills on the partial decriminalization of marijuana use and the legalization of same-sex unions.
Barbados has been a British colony since 1627 and gained independence in 1966. The head of state is the Queen of Great Britain, represented by the Governor General. The country is located in the Caribbean, with a population of almost 300 thousand people.
