The European Union is already working on the 12th package of sanctions against Russia. These restrictions do not have an immediate effect, but gradually create more and more problems in the economy of the aggressor country.

Political scientist Igor Reiterovich told Channel 24 about this, noting that sanctions against Russia remain effective. But there are still areas where no restrictions have been introduced. Although it would be worth doing.

What sanctions should be imposed against Russia?

As Reiterovich noted, the West has not yet imposed any sanctions against nuclear energy. This would be a powerful blow that would cause problems for Russia. But in general, sanctions are gradually working and putting pressure on the local economy.

The process of introducing sanctions is similar to the tactics of a python, which gradually strangles and does not allow resistance. Restrictions in this format apply. They do not have a colossal effect immediately, but they force Russia to spend additional resources to circumvent sanctions. – noted Reiterovich.

Russia is still trying to sell its own resources. And if it is difficult for them to do this in Europe and the United States, then there are other states that are ready to buy the same Russian oil. It is necessary to block other directions.

Russia is adapting. But this does not allow them to look into the future with confidence. There is an understanding that at one moment everything can collapse. If those countries that buy Russian oil refuse to do so for a month or more, then the situation for the Kremlin will be catastrophic. A sign of their crisis is a simple fact – the resources that they have accumulated over the years are now being “eaten up” and decreasing. Sooner or later they will finally end,” said Reiterovich.

Sanctions against Russia: briefly

  • The European Union is trying to reach an agreement on supporting Ukraine during the European Council meeting in December. There we are talking about opening accession negotiations, allocating 50 billion euros in aid, 12 packages of sanctions, etc.
  • An EU official told a Channel 24 correspondent about this off the record. It is hoped that EU countries will reach agreement on all these issues.
  • Unfortunately, Russia still remains a major player in the oil market. Many Western companies still continue to cooperate with the aggressor country.
