Former NATO commander Admiral James Stavridis believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin will end his life like Nicholas II, the last emperor of the Russian Empire.
Stavridis shared his opinion with Newsweek.
Earlier, Russian media quoted Stavridis as saying: “Putin’s economy is growing… And his armies… turned into skilled defenders behind belts of mines, obstacles and tanks — and all this under the protection of air power, which Ukraine cannot match”.

Stavridis, a retired US Navy admiral who served as NATO's Supreme Commander from 2009 to 2013, responded to Russian media on his X page (formerly Twitter) and wrote:
— You did not remind your subscribers that I also said this year that: Putin killed (Evgenia, — Ed.) Prigogine, that Putin & #8212; the best seller of NATO membership (we are talking about Sweden and Finland, which submitted applications to the Alliance, — Ed.) throughout history, and that he thinks he is Stalin, but will end up like Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia, — he wrote.
Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov, or Nicholas II, abdicated the throne in 1917 after 23 years of autocratic rule. Nicholas II and his family were executed by firing squad in 1918.
— Putin continues to hold sole power in Russia, but, of course, signs of discontent are obvious — from the Prigozhin uprising to the hundreds of thousands of young military-aged men leaving their homeland, — Stavridis said in an interview with Newsweek.
He is convinced that the reign of the Kremlin dictator will end with his overthrow and execution.
— I would argue that over time, the likelihood of Putin being overthrown like Nicholas II will be higher than the likelihood of him dying of natural causes like Stalin. He needs to negotiate an end to his adventure in Ukraine that will allow him to declare victory, hold Crimea and the land bridge to Russia, otherwise the odds against him will grow inexorably. In this sense, he has already lost the war, — says Admiral James Stavridis.
In parallel, Stavridis called on the United States to provide more assistance to Ukraine, while the Ukrainian state is preparing for another harsh winter.

However, Republicans in the US Congress are slow to allocate funds to Ukraine, while there is a political struggle within America to protect the US-Mexico border from illegal migrants.
Speaking to John Catsimatidis on his radio show The Cats Roundtable, Stavridis said on Sunday:
— This is a very dangerous situation, and the real action here is not really in Kyiv. Real Action — in Washington. We must provide military support to Ukraine. Their cause is just. We can afford it, and we must do it. So I only worry about a war in Ukraine if the US and our European allies fail to live up to their commitments to support Ukraine, — he said.
Recall that in October 2023, US President Joe Biden requested $61 billion in aid to Ukraine, but the US Congress has not yet approved this funding. Additionally, the Pentagon warned Congress this week that it will soon run out of money to support Ukraine.
