The Kremlin ordered the regions in the federation to assemble “volunteer” battalions. According to ISW, more than 30,000 new servicemen can fight in the Russian army by the end of August.
Each region in Russia must create at least one battalion. There are 85 of them in total, including the occupied Sevastopol and Crimea. This was reported at the American Institute for the Study of War on July 13.
Russia does not announce general mobilization
It is likely that the Kremlin ordered the Russian “subjects of the federation” (regions) to form volunteer battalions to participate in the Russian invasion of Ukraine instead of declaring partial or full mobilization in Russia, the report says.
The term “volunteer mobilization” is rather in total, means that the Kremlin ordered 85 regions of the federation to recruit and financially stimulate men to form new battalions.
It is known that regional officials take men under the age of 50 mainly on a six-month contract and offer an average salary of 220 000 to 350,000 rubles per month. And this is approximately from 3750 to 6000 US dollars.
Some regions offer an instant increase in military service – an average of 200 thousand rubles, that is, approximately 3,400 US dollars.
How many “volunteers” the Kremlin can gather
RosSMI has already confirmed the fact of creating or deploying volunteer battalions in the Kursk, Primorsky Territories, Bashkortostan, Chuvashia, Chechnya, Tatarstan, in Moscow, Perm, Nizhny Novgorod and Orenburg and Tyumen regions.
Until the end of August, volunteer battalions can form about 34,000 new military personnel, if each subject of the federation creates at least one military unit of 400 people. – the message says.
The number may change, because some subjects of the federation, such as Tatarstan and Chechnya, create 2 – 4 “volunteer battalions”. At the same time, some subjects of the federation may not take part in the creation of battalions.
The newly formed battalions are now leaving for the training grounds. They may complete their training before the end of August, but they will not be combat-ready in such a short period.
