Putin Didn't Expect It: Why the Kremlin Shook at Trump's Encroachments on Greenland Vera Konoval

This is not the first time in recent times that Donald Trump has expressed his intention to buy Greenland. Russia has reacted quite violently to such statements by the new US president.

There they are afraid that the US will expand its influence in the Arctic, and this will negatively affect Russia. Russian opposition political strategist Abbas Gallyamov told 24 Channel why the Kremlin has actually started to get seriously nervous.

What the Kremlin's reaction indicates

Chairwoman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko said that Russia is concerned about the newly elected US president's statements about his intention to acquire Greenland. According to her, Trump is thus demonstrating his intention to increase his influence in the Arctic, which is of “enormous strategic and geopolitical importance for Russia.”

The Russian official insists that the expansion of US influence in this region cannot be allowed. It is obvious that her words also reflect the wariness of Vladimir Putin himself.

Putin was alarmed primarily because his economic situation is already very bad. The same is true at the front. The offensive impulses are close to exhaustion, the number of victims is huge. This is Putin's main limiting point, Trump is already an appendix. Because if he felt comfortable in the possibility of continuing the war, he would not pay attention to Trump, – explained Abbas Gallyamov.

The head of the Kremlin would not be too worried about all this, because he still has nuclear weapons, which would not allow Trump, so to speak, to directly rebel against Russia. However, this would be on condition that Russia had a strong economy and army, and this is not the case at all.

“In this sense, the fact that Trump is unpredictable is beginning to confuse Putin. Trump is simply quite cynical, he respects strength. Therefore, the weaker Putin becomes, the more Trump's hands will be untied in relation to Russia,” the political strategist emphasized.

The fact is that Putin is also someone who only takes into account strength, and therefore understands where this is all heading. Instead of being an equal opponent to the newly elected US president, the Russian dictator is simply giving up his positions.

“As for Greenland itself, this could simply be Trump's flanking maneuver. That is, Putin has taken a strong position in Ukraine, threw everything he could there, and Trump is approaching him through the north – NATO is knocking on a different door. This could be a cunning, calculated move,” Gallyamov noted.

The political strategist added that Greenland could simply be a new bargaining chip between the countries. They say that a new negotiating position is emerging, where Russia already has a request to the US.
