A man who offered “rescue” for money was taken into custody in the Kyiv region/Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office

A 28-year-old man was taken into custody in the Kyiv region, who, under the pretext of volunteering, promised to take people out of the besieged Mariupol. For this, he wanted to get 10 thousand hryvnia.

Head of the National Police Igor Klymenko said that the suspect signed up as a volunteer in one of the funds. There he helped with documentation.

How a man deceived a victim

The suspect came across a message from a girl in one of the social networks, who asked for help to take her mother and stepfather out of the besieged Mariupol. The husband replied that he could organize it for 10 thousand hryvnia.

The victim immediately transferred the amount to the “volunteer” card and waited for the arrival of relatives. She hoped for an agreement and did not look for other options for their salvation.

However, according to the investigation, on March 20, as a result of the suspect’s empty promises and his delay, the victim’s parents died during the shelling of Mariupol.

Even after that, the suspect for a long time assured the woman that with her relatives are fine, but he did not return the money received for transportation, the prosecutor's office reported.

The scheme was not new for the man

According to The detainee also appropriated about 250 thousand hryvnias to the cyber police for fuel for the military, which he did not even plan to buy.

“Under the pretext of providing volunteers with fuel coupons, he took money from the latter, but did not fulfill his obligations, and did not return the funds. According to this scheme, during March 2022, the attacker deceived three volunteers,” said Igor Klymenko.

At the prosecutor's request, the man will be held in custody during the investigation without the possibility of bail.” The court arrested the suspect for 50 days – as part of the pre-trial investigation.
