Potential electoral death: a political scientist assessed Orban’s visit to Ukraine Melania Golembiowska

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban arrived on a visit to Kyiv on July 2. This visit will give Ukraine and Hungary an opportunity to improve relations. However, Orban acts in his own interests.

Political scientist Oleg Sahakyan told 24 Channel that the Prime Minister of Hungary wants to strengthen his position in his country through a competitor and show his leadership in Europe. If Donald Trump becomes the next US President, he aims to become his best friend from Europe.

What will give Orban's visit to Ukraine

According to Sahakyan, negotiations between Vladimir Zelensky and Orban were more successful for Ukraine. For the prime minister, the visit itself is a positive fact. Thanks to this visit, a positive situation is emerging, a certain corridor through which it will be possible to resolve several issues with Hungary without surrendering national interests.

Now Orban is interested in a constructive dialogue with Ukraine, the political scientist emphasized.

Now it is important for Orban to distance himself a little from the pro-Russian position and switch to the Chinese one. In addition, he needs to demonstrate his dignity to the EU and prepare for the potential arrival of Trump, for whom Orban wants to become a beloved European friend.

Thus, there is a stretch to four poles, where Orban is trying to play his role of capitalizing contacts, noted Sahakyan.

Electoral death of Orbán

Also, according to him, attention needs to be paid to the internal situation in Hungary itself. The local politician Peter Magyar made a lot of noise and “drank” a lot of Orbán’s electoral blood over the past six months. In Hungary, for the first time in a long time, there was a demand for an alternative to Orban. Electoral death is growing among his voters and associates.

The European Parliamentary elections demonstrated this well. There, 30% of voters decided that they were tired of Orban. Orban won the election, but the overall picture of electoral dynamics was revealed in full, that serious problems await him just around the corner, the political scientist noted.

Nothing better, there was no such thing as a foreign visit for political stability in Hungary for Orbán. Therefore, the statement at the end of the meeting with Zelensky noted the attention to the potential signing of an agreement on cooperation between the two countries. Ukraine clearly emphasized that this is possible only on the principles of reciprocity and mirroring.

The same agreements between Hungary and its neighbors for Orban is one of his electoral chips. With them he demonstrates that he is reconciling and fixing Hungarian positions with his neighbors, protecting them and the interests of ethnic Hungarians,” Sahakyan explained.

European Moment

According to a political scientist, a significant number of European countries are talking about depriving Hungary of its voting rights because they actively abuse their veto power. Therefore, Orbán wants to demonstrate his commitment to the European Union. The best time to do this is when Hungary takes over the EU Council Presidency.

He wants to demonstrate that he is the best leader Europe,” added Sahakyan.
