Why Ukraine does not break ties with Georgia/Channel 24
In Georgia, the authorities and the population differ in their positions. The country thinks it will become an island of transit in different directions.
Political scientist Oleg Sahakyan spoke about this on air on Channel 24 on March 13. He noted that the Georgian authorities want to benefit from both Russia and the West.
“We see that both Georgia and Moldova quickly after Ukraine decided to apply to the EU. In geopolitics, emotions are superfluous, but it's hard to comment here without them, because it doesn't look very good when you want to be together in happiness, but refuse to impose sanctions in trouble . You explain that you don't want a second front and have generally learned to live with Russia,” Sahakyan said.
They won't go without consequences
According to the political scientist, Georgia and Moldova want to sit on not even two, but three chairs. He noted that, despite everything, Georgians and Ukrainians do not have hostility towards each other.
I would say that Georgia is pursuing a policy a la Turkey. The only difference is that geopolitical, economic and military weight is incomparable,” Sahakyan said.
He explained that in Turkey, the policy towards Ukraine is ensured, at a minimum, by supplying bayactors and closing the Bosporus and the Dardanelles, and in The only thing left for Georgia is friendly and warm relations between peoples. This is what prevents Ukrainian diplomacy from burning bridges. This connection softens everything.
“Therefore, all statements relate exclusively to the Georgian authorities. But this is a serious challenge, because such a policy of Georgia and Moldova will not remain without consequences for the future,” the political scientist said.
