Poland is ready to provide fighter jets to Ukraine, but not everything is so simple

< p _ngcontent-sc148="" class="news-annotation">Ukraine continues to negotiate with partners on the transfer of aviation to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in particular, fighters. Poland has said that they are ready to provide us with these aircraft, but it is necessary that other countries of the North Atlantic Alliance make the same decisions beforehand. Brussels, Lisbon and Tallinn also spoke on this issue.

Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki stated at the summit of EU leaders in Brussels that his state is ready to provide fighter jets to Ukraine, but not one of the first. Obviously, Warsaw is afraid to make such a decision first among other NATO members.

Who could lend a helping hand to Ukraine in the aviation issue

Morawiecki also noted that the position of Poland on this issue is unshakable. According to him, the countries that have the most of them could be the first to provide Kyiv with modern combat aircraft.

Our position here is clear. We can only act jointly within the framework of the whole unification of the North Atlantic Treaty. If such a decision is made, then we will not be the first to provide fighter jets, but we will probably respond positively to this,” a senior official said.

In the European Parliament, Portugal and Estonia support the provision of fighter jets to Ukraine

It should be said that other high-ranking European officials, except for Morawiecki, are ready to stand side by side in defense of the support of our state:

  • It is known that Madam President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola called on the EU countries during Zelensky's visit to Brussels provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with long-range systems and combat aircraft as soon as possible. As she noted, the political will of some states would save the lives of a large number of people.
  • Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa also stated that there are no “red lines” in the issue of providing our state with fighter jets. Actually, it is known that the Portuguese army has 27 F-16 fighters, but, unfortunately, Lisbon cannot provide them to us without the consent of NATO.
  • In addition, Madam Prime Minister of Estonia Kai Kallas emphasized that that her country does not have such aviation, but if it had, it would immediately go to Ukraine. She soon added that the member states of the European Union should buy weapons and ammunition for the Armed Forces together.
