According to media reports, Russia has stopped supplying gas to Poland and Bulgaria. The reason is the refusal to pay in Russian rubles. In Warsaw, however, they assure that the Poles can do without Russian blue fuel.

According to the Polish media, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki made such a statement during a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The head of government also confirmed that Russia blocked gas supplies.

There were threats from Russia, Morawiecki

Yes, I confirm that we received such threats from Russia, from Gazprom. They are connected with the method of payment – Poland complies with the terms of the contract and, perhaps, Russia will try to punish us in this way, – said Morawiecki.

The Polish prime minister assured that Warsaw had already prepared to receive gas in different directions. Morawiecki is confident that even before the launch of the Baltic gas pipeline, the Poles will be able to effectively protect their own economy.

Poles' gas needs can be met

Piotr Naimsky, Commissioner of the Polish Cabinet of Ministers for Energy Infrastructure, also supports the prime minister's position. He says that the Poles will receive gas at the same level as before.

All our gas needs can be met in other directions. We planned to stop supplies from Russia at the end of December 2022, as the long-term Yamal contract ends, but the Russians have accelerated this, Naimsky said.

What is known about Russia's gas blackmail:

  • Russia tried to circumvent Western sanctions by demanding payment for gas in Russian rubles. However, this situation did not suit other countries.
  • The EU and the G7 refused to pay in this way.
  • At the same time, Hungary said that it was not averse to paying for blue fuel in the Russian currency.
  • After that, the European Commission sent a letter to Budapest, indicating that such a move would be a violation of the sanctions.
