Germany must stop the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, as Russia is systematically violating international law. This was stated by Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in an article by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
The head of the Polish government explained that after the situation with Alexei Navalny, from the point of view of Warsaw, a constructive dialogue between Moscow and Europe is impossible. In addition, the Polish prime minister recalled other unacceptable actions of Russia in the international arena, “from stirring up the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and ending with aggression in Georgia and Ukraine.” “You cannot threaten Russia with your index finger from afar and then get involved in the Nord Stream 2 project with Gazprom,” Moravetsky wrote.
In addition, in Poland they believe that Nord Stream 2 undermines the energy policy of the European Union. According to Moravetsky, he opens up new financial injections for Russian oligarchs and increases Moscow's influence on Germany.
Earlier, the Polish authorities announced that they are ready to offer Germany their gas infrastructure instead of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline under construction, if Berlin decides to refuse to use it. This is the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline, which will connect fields on the Norwegian shelf in the North Sea with Poland via Denmark. The project is planned to be completed by October 2022.
In September, the German authorities did not rule out a change in attitude towards the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and the introduction of sanctions against it because of the situation around Alexei Navalny. However, the authorities have not yet begun to link these events officially. At the same time, many German politicians call on Chancellor Angela Merkel to suspend the construction of the gas pipeline or completely abandon it. For example, Friedrich Merz, a candidate for the post of leader of Germany's ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, called for a moratorium for two years.
Initially, the Nord Stream 2 export gas pipeline was supposed to be commissioned at the end of 2019, but the launch date had to be postponed for a year due to US restrictions.
