North Atlantic Alliance intends to accept Finland and Sweden, which will expand it presence at the borders of Russia. Poland is already calling for the demilitarization of Kaliningrad on this score.

This opinion was expressed by the former Deputy Minister of Defense of Poland, Romuald Sheremetiev. He believes that this is how the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO can change the situation in Europe.

The security of the entire eastern flank will be greatly enhanced, because both the Finns and the Swedes have decent armies. Moreover, in such a system, the Baltic Sea will become a NATO sea. However, there will be a very significant problem of the so-called Kaliningrad, Sheremetyev believes.

He also said that Kaliningrad should be asked to stop calling itself after the criminal Kalinin. Sheremetyev stressed that it was this Soviet leader who was responsible for the executions of Polish prisoners of war in Katyn.

Pay attention! The city of Kaliningrad until 1945 was the German Prussian city of Koenigsberg. On July 4, 1946, after the death of the “all-Union headman” Mikhail Kalinin, the city was renamed Kaliningrad in his honor. But Kalinin had nothing to do with the city.

Demilitarization of Kaliningrad

Sheremetyev insists that the Russian city should be demilitarized.

“Not Maybe NATO is sitting on a powder keg,” he said.

At the same time, Sheremetyev believes that in response to NATO expansion, Moscow can respond with a “howl”. At the same time, in his opinion, the threat of nuclear weapons should not be ruled out. After all, the Russians can scare nothing else.

Finland and Sweden join NATO

  • Finland and Sweden, which have borders with Russia, announced their intention to join NATO after the attack on Ukraine. Both states have officially made a decision. There was information that they could submit applications until Tuesday, May 16. The alliance stated that it supports the accession of the two states and will even shorten this procedure as much as possible for them. And Britain provided security guarantees for entry.
  • Putin, who was so afraid of NATO expansion to the east, already knows this. Finnish President Sauli Niinostiio informed the Kremlin dictator personally in a telephone call. According to him, he was calm when he heard that now NATO would be even closer than he could have imagined.
  • NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also said that the North Atlantic Alliance would increase its military presence in the Baltic Sea region. This will happen even before Finland and Sweden join NATO.
