“Playing with the West”: What Putin Wants to Achieve by Talking About Changing the Nuclear Doctrine Natalia Belzetskaya

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has once again resorted to nuclear blackmail and announced changes to the nuclear doctrine. This is another attempt to scare the West and dissuade it from granting permission to strike Russian territory with Western weapons.

We must not forget that the nuclear facilities of the aggressor country have previously been the target of attacks by Ukraine. Aviation expert Bohdan Dolince told Channel 24 about this, recalling that the systems that were hit were those that belong to the nuclear triad.

What is hidden behind Putin's statements

For Ukraine, the signals that are again coming from the Kremlin are of no importance. They do not influence the strategy of any actions. In addition, if we talk about the funds that were transferred by Putin, then back in 2022, many analysts drew attention to the fact that the use of tactical nuclear weapons has already been legalized within the Russian army

Moreover, the decision to use them can generally be made at the battalion level or at the level of an individual army. This does not require an order from Vladimir Putin.

Therefore, in fact, this is just a play on words, which is aimed at Western countries and is aimed at limiting Ukraine's ability to obtain expanded powers to use Western weapons. Or to influence the aid packages that they plan to transfer to us, – emphasized Bohdan Dolince.

An important component is that Russia has not only nuclear weapons, but also an element of the nuclear triad, that is, warheads that use kinetic energy. This is done by nuclear weapons carriers, but without the nuclear warhead itself. For example, in 2016, there were tests of these warheads.

“We see that the use of such types of weapons did not occur, although they are not classified as nuclear weapons. This looks exclusively like a game with the West,” the aviation expert concluded.

Recall that Vladimir Putin held an emergency meeting of the Security Council on September 25. There he announced changes to the nuclear doctrine, in particular the description of states and military alliances against which nuclear deterrence is carried out was expanded. Also, an attack by a non-nuclear state with nuclear support is now considered a joint attack on Russia.
