Germany called for the restoration of compulsory military conscription in the country, which was abolished back in 2011.
This proposal was made by the head of the German Ministry of Defense Boris Pistorius, writes BILD.
He noted that the lack of compulsory conscription in the country leads to an acute shortage of personnel for the Bundeswehr. Therefore, according to Pistorius, a conscription system similar to Sweden should be introduced in Germany. There, since 2017, all boys and girls are considered liable for military service.

Note that now in Germany, military service is completely voluntary. In addition, women in Germany have always been exempt from military service under the Basic Law of 1949.
Moving to the Swedish model would mean changing these rules.
German military experts approve of this initiative, because, in their opinion, only this will attract more people into the German Armed Forces and overcome the personnel crisis.
However, the liberal FDP party, part of the ruling coalition, has already called this a “huge encroachment on civil liberties”.
