What is known about Dmitry Fisher

Dmitry Vilgelmovich lived in Mirgorod and since 2017 held the position of deputy commander of the 40th tactical aviation brigade of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

He was on the front lines from the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and was directly involved in the battles for the liberation of Kiev, Kharkov, Sumy and Snake Island.

He was 50 years old at the time of his death. On June 5, 2022, his Su-27 aircraft was shot down by Russian air defense while carrying out a complex combat mission near the city of Orekhov in the Zaporizhia region.

Fischer was missing for a year and a half.

His body was evacuated by intelligence officers from the GUR special forces unit in early February 2024. DNA testing confirmed Dmitry Fisher's identity in March 2024. The burial took place in Mirgorod on March 28, 2024.

A pilot by vocation

According to Ukrinform, Dmitry’s wife, Svetlana, recalled that from childhood her husband affirmatively said: “I will be a military fighter pilot.”

He graduated with honors from the Suvorov Military School. Later, he mastered five types of aircraft, such as the Su-27 and MiG-29 fighters, the Su-24 bomber, the Su-17 fighter-bomber, and the L-39 trainer.

Fischer was also one of the first to be given access to the F-16 fighter jets during the 2011 Safe Skies exercise.

He was also a first-class flight instructor and put dozens of young pilots into the air.

Dmitry was among those who covered the skies during the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi from February 7 to 23, 2014. And when active hostilities began, Fischer in a Su-27 intercepted a Russian Il-20 turboprop aircraft that violated Ukrainian airspace south of Donetsk.

Fischer has represented the Ukrainian Air Force on numerous occasions and has won international aviation shows in Europe. In 2017, he won the prize for Best Aerobatic Display among non-NATO countries.

Among Dmitry’s awards, in addition to the title of Hero and the Gold Star, are the Medal for Military Service to Ukraine (2013) and the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, 3rd degree (2022).
