Pensions for Chernobyl victims: conditions of assignment

In 2024, the following expenses are provided for social support of Chernobyl victims:

The procedure for calculating pensions for Chernobyl victims is regulated by the Law of Ukraine On the status and social protection of citizens affected by the Chernobyl disaster No. 796-ХІI of January 28, 1991 (Articles 54, 59) and the Law of Ukraine On amendments to the Law of Ukraine On the status and social protection of citizens affected by due to the Chernobyl disaster dated June 29, 2021 No. 1584-IX.

According to documents, pensions for Chernobyl victims in 2024 are assigned in the amount of compensation for actual damage, based on the salary received by a person in the exclusion zone in 1986-1990. Or based on five times the minimum wage established by law on January 1 of the corresponding year.

Pensions for Chernobyl victims 2024: amount

In March 2024, an annual recalculation of pensions was carried out. Therefore, in April, people who took part in eliminating the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, as well as those affected by the Chernobyl disaster, received an increase in their pensions.

The amount of payments for disability resulting from illness or injury associated with the Chernobyl disaster has also been established.

In 2024, disability pensions for Chernobyl victims cannot be lower than the following indicators::

  • I group — 8,187.48 UAH;
  • II group — 6,549.98 UAH;
  • III group — 5,048.95 UAH;
  • children with disabilities — 5,048.95 UAH

The minimum amount of pensions for persons with disabilities due to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant depends on the average salary in Ukraine, from which insurance contributions were paid and which is taken into account for calculating the pension for the previous year.

The minimum pension for people with disabilities due to the Chernobyl disaster among liquidators of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident is:

  • I group (13,376.21 UAH) — 100% of the average salary from which insurance contributions were paid and which is taken into account for calculating the pension for the previous year;
  • II group (10,700.97 UAH) — 80% of the average salary from which insurance contributions were paid and which is taken into account for calculating the pension for the previous year (13,376.21 x 80%);
  • III group (8,025.73 UAH) — 60% of the average salary from which insurance contributions were paid and which is taken into account for calculating the pension for the previous year (13,376.21 x 60%).

Pension provision for Chernobyl victims in 2024 also provides for a reduction in the retirement age from 1 to 10 years, depending on the zone of radiological contamination where the person lived or worked, as well as on the duration of residence or work in the zone of radiological contamination .
