Passenger and freight trains collide in Greece: 32 dead, 85 injured

At least 26 people were killed and 85 others were injured in a collision between two trains near the city of Larissa in Greece. The incident took place late on the evening of February 28.

Several carriages derailed and at least 3 caught fire after the accident. By the way, it happened about 380 kilometers north of Athens.

How the accident happened

A passenger train from Athens to Thessaloniki and a freight train from Thessaloniki to Larissa collided in central Greece, said Costas Agorastos, governor of the Thessaly region.

According to him, the head-on collision was very strong, and the first four cars of the passenger train derailed, two of them were “almost completely destroyed.”

It was a very powerful encounter. It's a terrible night… It's hard to describe this tragedy,โ€ he said.

Agorastos also said that about 250 passengers were evacuated to Thessaloniki by bus.

What is known about the victims

The representative of the fire service Vassilis Vatrakoyanis during the briefing noted that “currently found 32 dead and 85 injured.” Among the injured, 25 people are in serious condition. 53 passengers were hospitalized, the rest were allowed to go home for outpatient treatment.

The local TV channel showed footage of the derailed wagons. They are heavily damaged, with broken windows, thick clouds of smoke around, as well as debris.

Rescuers work in the smoke with flashlights, pulling pieces of mangled metal from wrecked cars to look for people who could be trapped between the wreckage.
