Pack of 24 shells, firing range up to 6 km: what is TOS Solntepek

Over the past few days, units of the missile forces of the Ukrainian Defense Forces have destroyed a lot of Russian equipment, in particular the TOS-1A Solntepek heavy flamethrower multiple rocket launcher system.

What is known about the system and how TOS Solntsepek works – read in the material of ICTV Facts.

What is TOS Solntepek

The heavy flamethrower system (HFS) is used to destroy light armored vehicles, enemy personnel in open areas, as well as to destroy fortifications through a powerful volumetric explosion.

It is reported that the heavy flamethrower system has been in service with the radiation, chemical and biological defense forces of the Russian army since April 2001.

According to military experts, TOS is most effective when used in mountain conditions . We are talking about the mutual superposition of air shock waves and their multiple reflections from the surrounding rocks.

Solntsepek: how it works

The TOS thermobaric munition forms a cloud of explosive mixture and then detonates it. After an instantaneous detonation, the atmospheric pressure in the cloud jumps sharply, and then just as quickly drops by about 160 mm Hg.

As a result, even if the enemy managed to survive the explosion itself , such a sharp pressure drop is almost guaranteed to lead to death from rupture of internal organs.

High accuracy of TOS salvo firing is achieved through automatic targeting at a target located at a distance of up to 7 km.

Background

TOS-1A Solntsepek is a modification of TOS-1 Buratino . This heavy flamethrower multiple launch rocket system based on the T-72 tank was developed by the Russian Federation in the 1970s.

The first prototypes on the T-72 chassis were manufactured in one of the Omsk design bureaus. The complex consisted of a launcher with a package of 30 guides on the chassis of the T-72 tank and a transport-loading vehicle on the KrAZ-255B chassis.

In 1980 , the combat vehicle was successfully tested and was recommended for adoption.

20 years later, in 2001 , TOS-1 Buratino was modernized and received the name TOS-1A Solntsepek.

Distinctive features of TOS-1A Solntepek :

  • number of shells reduced to 24;
  • increased firing range to 6 km;
  • the KrAZ chassis was replaced with a modernized tracked base of the T-72A tank;
  • the duration of a full salvo for paired launches is 6 s, for single launches it is 12 s;
  • readiness time to open fire on a visible target after stopping the vehicle – 90 s;
  • firing is carried out with unguided rockets of 220 mm caliber, 3,300 mm long and weighing up to 217 kg.
