Orban wrote a letter demanding that all EU aid to Ukraine be blocked – Politico

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has released another statement, he proposes to block all EU aid to Ukraine, as well as the country’s future entry into the bloc. He demands that EU leaders reconsider their entire strategy for supporting Kyiv.

The publication reports this Politico.

It is noted that Orban wrote a letter to the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, which states that no decisions regarding funding for Ukraine, the opening of negotiations on accession to the EU or further sanctions against the Russian Federation can be made until a “strategic discussion” takes place in Brussels in mid-December .

“The European Council must take stock of the implementation and effectiveness of our current policy towards Ukraine, including various assistance programs,” Orban notes in the letter.

He also questions why Europe should continue to support Ukraine when the US, which provides the bulk of Kiev's military aid, may be unable to provide further funding due to partisan impasse over further support.

— The European Council must have a frank and open discussion regarding the feasibility of the EU's strategic goals in Ukraine. Do we consider these goals realistically achievable? Is this strategy sustainable without strong US support? Can we consider continued US support permanent? How we imagine the security architecture of Europe after the war, the letter says.

In particular, Orbán noted that “the European Council is unable to take key decisions on proposed security guarantees or additional financial support for Ukraine, approve a further strengthening of the EU sanctions regime or agree on the future of the enlargement process unless consensus is found on a strategy towards Ukraine.”

Let us recall that Orban earlier said that he considered it a mistake opening of negotiations on Ukraine's full membership in the European Union. In his opinion, the Ukrainian state is allegedly not ready yet.
