Orban proposes turning Ukraine into a buffer zone between Russia and the West

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban believes that the best option for Ukraine would be to act as a buffer zone between Russia and the West, since Moscow will never accept Ukraine’s membership in the EU and NATO.

Orban stated this during a European Voices discussion with Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel.

According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, it is better for Ukraine to be a buffer zone, but with security guarantees.

— Whether you like it or not, whether Ukrainians like it or not, Ukraine is where it is on the map. The best prospect would be for this to be a buffer zone between Russia and the West – with security guarantees, of course. If this fails, Ukraine will lose its land. The Russians will destroy Ukraine again and again, again and again, Orban said.

He stressed that Russia will never welcome such an EU and NATO member as Ukraine on its doorstep.

He also said that Ukraine and Georgia could be admitted to the European Union and NATO in 2008. But this chance was missed. According to Viktor Orban, Russia has grown stronger since then and will now not allow Ukraine to become a member of the EU and NATO.

— In 2008, we failed to successfully complete accession negotiations between Ukraine and Georgia, thereby losing Ukraine’s prospects as a future member of the European Union and NATO,” said the Hungarian Prime Minister.

Orbán also disagrees with the assertion that Ukraine is defending Europe. According to him, most European countries are already members of NATO, and NATO is much stronger than Russia. And Viktor Orban does not see any danger of a Russian attack on a NATO member.
