Orban is very confused: what is the Magyar phenomenon and what should Ukraine expect? Angela Figin

The newly created Tisza party of Peter Magyar received huge success in the elections to the European Parliament. Despite the fact that the current Hungarian Prime Minister spent 4 million euros on election advertising, which is literally 14 times more than other opposition parties could afford, his Fidesz party showed its worst result ever.

Back in April 2024, Peter Madyar did not have a game, that is, his rating was zero. Today he is already breathing down Orban’s neck. On 24 Channel the chairman of the Hungarian community of Kyiv and the region, Tibor Tompa, explained why Peter Magyar was received so well by Hungarian society.

2 factors of Magyar's success

As the chairman of the Hungarian community of Kyiv and the region noted, Hungarian citizens have a great need for Orban's opposition force . According to him, Magyar’s phenomenal success was influenced by 2 factors:

  • the first is that Peter Magyar exposed the huge corruption schemes taking place in Hungary under Orban's rule over the last 10 – 12 years;
  • the second is that an overwhelming number of young people became active and paid attention to Peter Magyar. By the way, young people are in a very difficult situation in Hungary, because Orbán is populistly relying only on old people.

In all localities where more than 20 thousand people live, Orban has actually lost popularity.

The turnout in these elections was extremely high. 90% of young people followed Peter Madyar and voted for him. Still, he is young, he is 43 years old, an aristocrat, speaks several foreign languages, a lawyer, worked for a long time in Brussels, – said Tompa.

The main goal of the head of the Tisa party is – change of Orban and authoritarian power through democratic means. Now he is actively working on this. In addition, Magyar is popular not only in Budapest, but throughout Hungary.

What is Magyar’s policy towards Ukraine

Magyar won 31% in the elections to the European Parliament, while Orban 44%. If this trend continues, then even two years will not be needed. Magyar may even overtake the current Prime Minister by the end of the year.

Orbán is very embarrassed by the emergence of this political force, Magyar, who gained a huge number of votes. He has as many as 7 mandates out of 21 that Hungary has in the European Parliament,” noted the chairman of the Hungarian community of Kyiv and the region.

One mandate for Peter Magyar belongs to Mrs. Gerzhani, who is originally from Ukraine. During one of her recent statements, she said that the Tisza party is fully in favor of the European direction and that Hungary must return to the fold of European peoples, European governance and get rid of the negative things that Orban is doing today.

The situation in relation to Ukraine is not simple. Peter Magyar himself said about this that, according to his research, Orban’s brainwashing over the past 10 years has so strengthened the Russian orientation of Hungary that in fact more than 40% of the country’s population is against providing military assistance to Ukraine. It is necessary to carry out appropriate work here,” Tompa emphasized.

The head of the Tisa party met with some representatives of the Ukrainian elite. And most importantly, Peter Magyar has nothing to do with United Russia.

“I exchanged a few words with him before the elections. He is clearly looking and wants to find difference from Orban, common interests between Ukraine and Hungary,” added the chairman of the Hungarian community of Kyiv and the region.

How Magyar and Orban reacted to the election results

  • The leader of the Tisza party called the result “the beginning of the end” for Viktor Orban and his “power factories”. According to the newcomer to Hungarian politics, this day is proof of the possibility of politics for the benefit of the Hungarian people and promised to pull the country out of the quagmire.
  • Orban, in his speech before the announcement of the final results, said that the Hungarians confirmed the government’s pro-peace policy and authorized it to keep the country from war.
  • Note that the party of Orban’s pro-Russian colleague, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, was also defeated in the elections to the European Parliament. The opposition PS party led by Michal Szymecka won with 27.81% of the votes.
