Orban is tired of Europe: who is his competitor Magyar and how can he change Hungarian policy Angela Figin

Viktor Orban's Fidesz party showed the worst result in the European Parliament elections in its entire history. The figure is still high, but one and a half times lower than it was before. At the same time, the opposition Tisza party of Peter Magyar received almost 30% of voters and claims as many as 7 mandates.

On air 24 Kanala Jaroslav Bozhko, head of the Doctrine Center for Political Studios, said whether the newcomer to Hungarian politics, Peter Magyar, can really pose a serious competition for Orban and his political force. By the way, after counting 98.48% of the votes, Fidesz – KDNP gained 44.52% of the votes, which allowed the party to claim 11 seats in the European Parliament.

A bolt from the blue for Orban

European Parliament elections are often an intermediate moment for new European parties, where they have the opportunity to prepare for national elections and demonstrate good results. European Parliament elections often become the debut of new parties, which will then play a significant role in the domestic political life of their countries.

In this sense, the success of Petr Magyar's Tisza party is a kind of political bolt from the blue, because until now no one could provide Orban with such threatening competition, Bozhko noted.

Of course, there were other parties in Hungary, but they were all fairly small projects. The biggest opposition party to Orban was the Hungarian Socialist Party, which was in power in the 90s, so it is not associated with qualitative changes in people's minds and cannot compete with Orban for the center-right, conservatives, etc.

By the way, Magyar’s wife was a member of the Fidesz party and he divorced her after one of the scandals in which she got involved.

“This is the case where there will be real competition for votes in Hungary, it is likely that Peter Magyar will be able to become not only a powerful force in the European Parliament, but also within the country itself, as the largest opposition party,” said the head of the Doctrine Center for Political Studies.

What will give Magyar success in the elections to the European Parliament

It is possible that the success of the Tisa party will be reflected including on the policies of the current Orban government, which will have to look back at its political competitor.

Perhaps we will still see attempts to crush Peter Magyar by administrative means. However, it is clear that victory in the European parliamentary elections will give Magyar – an influx of a number of new sponsors, greater media attention,” Bozhko noted.

To one degree or another, the European media are tired of perceiving Hungary only through the prism of Orbán. At the same time, we should not yet say that this is a guaranteed institutionalized political force, because in a country like Hungary, being in the opposition with good results is not easy, because it requires huge funds for obtaining media, organizational efforts, and this is always a big deal. a challenge for the young party.

Peter Magyar’s position on Ukraine is ambiguous. As experts note, one should not count on him being a directly pro-Ukrainian politician in Hungary.

“This must be viewed through the prism of Europe, because one way or another, even if Peter Magyar was not distinguished by any special pro-Ukrainian statements, which may also be due to the peculiar landscape in the country, he will still definitely be guided by the common European policy, in particular in the field of foreign affairs,” added the head of the Doctrine Center for Political Studies.
