Orban criticized EU actions and urged to prepare for a protracted war

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has criticized the EU's policy against Russia. He believes that EU sanctions against Russia have failed and called for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.

Orban, who is a friend of Vladimir Putin, said the sanctions against Russia are poorly designed. At the same time, he said that energy restrictions are a dubious mechanism, because in world history sanctions are usually imposed by those who have a dominant position.

Orban says that sanctions poorly designed against Russia

Orbana questioned the fact that the EU countries have a dominant position, because they are buyers of Russian energy resources.

Now in the energy sector, it is doubtful that we have a dominant position, because we are buyers, and the Russians are suppliers, – said the head of the Hungarian government.

Orban said that Hungary needs to prepare for a protracted war in Europe because for the erroneous actions of the EU authorities. According to him, the situation in the EU, in addition to sanctions against Russia, is exacerbated by the migration crisis.

“We cannot, like ostriches, hide our heads in the sand. We must accept the reality: if this continues, the economy of the continent will fall, people will be in danger, and it seems that we need to prepare for a protracted war. Hungary needs an army of deterrence” , – said the Prime Minister of Hungary.

Important. Orban's statement came after Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó visited Moscow. In the Kremlin, Hungary agreed with Russia to defer gas payments and redirect gas supplies through the Turkish Stream. Hungary did this against the backdrop of the Nord Stream explosions.

Orban calls for peace talks

According to Orban, there is a so-called “peace camp”, in which he also includes Hungary. As the Hungarian leader said, in this camp, the solution to the current crisis can be seen because of the peace talks.

“The Holy Father is for peace. Kissinger is for peace. We were in Germany, there is a respected philosopher called Habermas, on the left, not from our political community. But he says the same thing that we do. There are Americans, Republicans , world-class businessmen. I feel that the voice for a ceasefire and then for a peace agreement after the ceasefire is getting stronger,” he said.

Hungary may lose EU funding

  • In September, the European Commission recommended not to allocate funds to Hungary due to problems with the rule of law. Hungary risks losing 65% of funds for three programs from a key EU fund. We are talking about blocking an amount of approximately 7.5 billion euros.
  • The European Commission has submitted proposals to the European Council, which must make a final decision within a month. In response to the threat of losing funds, the Hungarian government has proposed the creation of a new anti-corruption agency.
  • The blocking of funds for Hungary is the next step for the EU in the sanctions mechanism that was launched against Budapest in April 2022.

  • It is important that in September the European Parliament recognized that Hungary has a “hybrid regime” that undermines European values. The European Parliament adopted a report stating that Hungary is not a democracy.
