Orban considers new sanctions against Russia a “historical mistake”/Russian media a package of sanctions to make Russia even more aware of the insane consequences of unleashing a war against Ukraine. However, despite the atrocities of the Russians, there are still leaders who do not agree with such a step.

Since the beginning of the Russian war against Ukraine, the Hungarian authorities have been trying in every possible way to sabotage all measures to prevent the aggressor. Orban and his government are trying to find some reason not to take an active stand against the occupiers. is working on the adoption of the 6th package of sanctions, which should be a very painful blow for the Russians. In particular, it refers to the gradual rejection of the aggressor's energy carriers. Europe is actively working on the construction of new gas pipelines and fuel supply chains so that the implementation of this solution does not hit Europe itself.

However, not everyone is ready for such a cardinal step and a possible deterioration of their interests and amenities. As expected, Hungary is not ready to infringe on its interests in order to stop the war in Ukraine.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban addressed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and called the adoption of the 6th package of sanctions a “historical mistake”. According to him, not only Hungary, but the EU in general, is not ready to give up Russian gas, oil and coal. He complains that not all Member States have the conditions to ensure such a major step.

Reducing Russian fossil fuel purchases will not be possible without strong and rapid investment in our energy infrastructure and an accelerated transition to a green economy,” Orban said.

He worries that the EU will not help Hungary overcome the consequences caused by the rejection of Russian energy. Earlier it was reported that Hungary and Slovakia may be allowed to postpone the Russian energy embargo.
