Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the West should strike a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin on a new security architecture for Ukraine, which should include neither the return of Crimea nor NATO membership.
He said this in an interview with former Fox News journalist Tucker Carlson.
The Hungarian politician claims that Ukraine is allegedly on the way to losing the war due to the fact that Russian troops are outnumbered.
We must reach an agreement with the Russians on a new security architecture to ensure Ukraine's security and sovereignty, not NATO membership, Orban said.
The prime minister also said that the return of Crimea, which Russia annexed back in 2014, before a full-scale invasion “is completely unrealistic”.
In his opinion, the best chance for peace is the return to power of the former president US Donald Trump and the end of military support for Ukraine.
Viktor Orban became famous for his anti-Ukrainian stance when he tried to block EU aid, refused to supply weapons to Kiev, and repeatedly stated that the Ukrainian counteroffensive was doomed to failure.
The Hungarian government has also entered into agreements with Russia in the field of energy, gas supplies and promoting the construction of a nuclear power plant under the leadership of Russia, despite the position on the EU and NATO.
The politician called the Putin regime the model on which he built what he calls “illiberal democracy”, opposing the multicultural values of the EU.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has already reacted to the statements of the Hungarian prime minister, once again emphasizing that Ukraine does not trade either its territories or its sovereignty.
– We do not know how it is in Hungary, but Ukraine does not trade either its territories or its sovereignty. And the world will not trade. And the Russian leadership, no matter how public lawyers it attracts, will certainly bear responsibility for all the harm caused to Ukrainians, – Oleg Nikolenko, a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, wrote on his Facebook page.
Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said, that he does not consider the Russian dictator a war criminal and does not believe in the victory of Ukraine.
