Orban announces results of propaganda “referendum” on Ukraine’s EU membership

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced the results of the Voks2025 propaganda poll on Ukraine's accession to the European Union. Allegedly, 2 million 278 thousand Hungarians took part in the vote.

The publication Telex writes about this.

Thus, according to the results of the Voks2025 vote, 2 million 168 thousand (95%) spoke out against Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, and the remaining 5% support Ukraine on this path.

Last year, there were 7.8 million people on the voter list for the European Parliament elections, so only 29% of voters cast their votes during this vote, while more than 5 million Hungarian adults did not.

As Telex notes, Voks2025 is not a referendum, but a public opinion poll that is not legally binding and can only be used as a political tool.

How the voting was conducted

It has already emerged that during the Voks2025 online poll, one person could vote multiple times using different email addresses.

At the same time, government spokesman Gergely Gulias said that printed ballots are verified by a notary and cannot be forged, and online voting is also verified by a notary. However, Gulias could not say whether the system filters people who voted both on paper and online.

Thus, in Fidesz they threatened that if Ukraine becomes a member of the European Union, the country would allegedly be overwhelmed by infectious diseases, Ukrainian criminals, stores would be filled with low-quality products, Hungary would lose EU agricultural subsidies, and the country would allegedly have to enter the war.

As Telex notes, Fidesz parties have never been strangers to such hate campaigns. But previously, they were limited to specific social groups, while now they are aimed at the entire country.

Orban put forward the idea of a so-called referendum after the extraordinary EU summit on March 6, 2025. At that time, the head of the Hungarian government argued that supporting Ukraine and its membership in the EU would have a huge cost that neither the European Union nor the Hungarian economy could afford.
