On Saturday, October 26, parliamentary elections were held in Georgia. The ruling Georgian Dream competed with opposition parties.

In the evening, the Central Election Commission of Georgia announced the preliminary results after counting 70 percent of the votes. The ruling Georgian Dream received almost 53 percent of the support. The opposition received more than 35 percent in total. Several parties did not overcome the 5 percent barrier, 24 Kanal reports.

Opposition gathers for protest

Soon after the CEC's statement, former President Mikheil Saakashvili's Unity – National Movement party announced that it does not recognize the results of the parliamentary elections.

The Coalition for Change also joined the protest. Its leader accused the Georgian Dream of carrying out a constitutional coup. Subsequently, the Strong Georgia coalition also took a similar position.

The opposition has already announced protests.

The chairperson of the Unity – National Movement party Tina Bokuchava noted during her speech that the Georgian Central Election Commission “fulfilled a dirty order” from the Georgian Dream. The politician noted that “Ivanishvili stole the European future from the Georgian people.”

We will fight like never before to return the European future of our country, said Bokuchava.

Important: According to preliminary data, the Georgian Dream may receive about 88 mandates in parliament, and the opposition – 62. To approve the government, 76 votes are needed.

Recall that the leader of the Georgian Dream Bidzina Ivanishvili previously spoke about plans to ban opposition parties if the Georgian Dream manages to get a constitutional majority in parliament.
