It is known that the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Parliament on that day supported the decision to ratify the protocol on Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance. Now the issue of Sweden's accession to NATO will be considered by the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.

It should be noted that in order to ratify the protocol on the accession of the Swedish kingdom, the decision must be supported by a majority of voting participants in Turkey parliament. It is currently unknown when exactly the vote on Sweden's accession to NATO should take place in Turkey.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström has already responded to this decision on social media. He welcomed that Turkey's Foreign Affairs Committee approved Sweden's application to join NATO.

Erdogan previously approved Sweden's entry into NATO

  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a protocol on Sweden's accession to NATO on October 23. The Turkish leader sent this document to the parliament for consideration.
  • Two days later, this protocol was signed by the speaker of the Turkish parliament Numan Kurtulmuş. At the same time, the Hungarian parliament rejected a proposal to hold a vote on approving Sweden's application to join NATO.
  • It should be noted that since 2022, Turkey has been blocking Sweden's entry into NATO. However, already in the summer of 2023, at the Alliance summit in Vilnius, she agreed to unblock the process in exchange for assistance in rapprochement with the European Union.
  • Ukrainian political scientist Taras Zagorodniy said that Erdogan made such a decision, because he was afraid of further negative reaction from the United States. Although, from the very approval of Sweden’s entry into the Alliance, the Turkish leader received preferences.
