On December 17, North Korea launched a ballistic missile towards the Sea of Japan. It could have been a short-range weapon.

It should be noted that the date of the missile launch coincided with the anniversary of the death of the previous North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il. He passed into the world on December 17, 2011.

North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the sky

The South Korean publication noted that after the first news of the missile launches there was an assumption that it was an intercontinental ballistic missile. This assumption follows from previous forecasts from Seoul, which suggested the possibility of a similar launch this month. It was a short range weapon. The launch took place at 22:38 local time from a location near Pyongyang.

The missile traveled a distance of approximately 570 kilometers before falling into the sea.

It is noteworthy that North Korea pre-launched a ballistic missile on November 22. Then the Seoul authorities qualified this launch as unsuccessful.

This is not the first time the DPRK launches its missiles

  • On November 22, North Korea announced that it had launched a launch vehicle into the sky that contained a spy satellite. This launch was personally observed by North Korean leader Kim Jong-in.
  • North Korean state news agencies reported that the Mulligan-1 satellite was launched using a Chollima-1 rocket Sohe Cosmodrome. The DPRK also announced plans to send several more spy satellites into earth orbit in the near future.
  • In September 2023, North Korea also launched 2 of its missiles towards the Sea of Japan. This event occurred against the backdrop of the North Korean leader's visit to Russia for a meeting with Vladimir Putin.
  • It should be noted that the DPRK regularly fires missiles towards Japan or South Korea. Fortunately, they are launched directly into the sea.
  • Previously, the DPRK launched its short-range ballistic missiles on August 31. These launches were supposed to simulate attacks on military targets in South Korea in the event of an escalation of the military situation with it.
