Many Puerto Ricans are without electricity. Thus, the general power outage occurred on the night of January 1, 2025 due to the failure of all the island's power plants as a result of an accident.

This was reported by Channel 24 with reference to a message from Governor Pedro Pierluisi.

The reason for the power outage in Puerto Rico

The incident occurred in Puerto Rico on December 31.

Let's add that the power outage began at 5:30 a.m. local time. Bloomberg writes that by midday, about 85% of Puerto Rico's 1.4 million residents were without electricity.

The country's main power plant, Luma Energy, reports that the cause of the incident is still being investigated, but it has been preliminarily established that the problem could have arisen from an underground power line.

As of 4:25 p.m. (Kyiv time), more than 80% of the island's consumers were left without electricity, but service was restored in hospitals and other large institutions, including the water supply and sewerage department, the company reported.
