Hristo Grozev on nuclear strike/Screenshot from video
Bellingcat investigator Christo Grozev said a limited nuclear strike would not help Russia's military strategy.
According to him, a tactical strike is done with the aim of scaring someone. But the Ukrainians and the country's authorities proved that such a symbolic strike simply would not be worse than what the Russian invaders had already done in Mariupol and Kharkov.
A limited nuclear strike will not help Russia's military strategy , because a tactical strike is carried out with the aim of scaring someone. That is, it will be another form of atrocities, and this will not change, but will motivate the Ukrainian army even more,” Grozev explained.
Putin wants to aggravate the conflict with a nuclear strike
Grozev explained that more what matters is what goal Putin wants to achieve with a nuclear strike.
The goal was not to bring Ukraine to surrender positions, compromise. The goal would be to aggravate the conflict so that NATO would also join it. Because at a certain point it becomes profitable for the Kremlin,” the investigator explained.
He explained that Putin can use the “engage NATO” formula to lose. Because this way it will be losing the war not because of Ukraine, but because of NATO intervention. He will not want to give victory to Ukraine.
But the risk of using nuclear weapons is decreasing
This particular risk remained. But it is significantly reduced due to this disloyalty, because Putin will not give an order to use nuclear weapons if he is not sure that this order will be carried out, Grozev explained.
Recent weeks prove that very many officers, he said, are not prepared to carry out such orders. But the very fact that Putin will have doubts will significantly reduce the risk of making this decision.
