Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during a telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin, called on the latter to declare a unilateral ceasefire. But everyone understands that now is not the time for negotiations.
Ramis Yunus, an American political scientist and former head of the Azerbaijani government staff, told Channel 24 about this. According to him, it is not necessary to pay much attention to calls for a ceasefire. It is already clear to everyone that now no one is going to concede in the war.
In this situation, there will be no negotiations now. If we understand this, then the President of Turkey does not understand this? If this was said in a public plane, then you need to look at everything deeper. Erdogan hinted to Russia that a goodwill gesture should be shown. Russia attacked, therefore, if it wants to stop everything, then let it withdraw its troops,” Yunus said.
Erdogan is a certain moderator between Ukraine and Russia on the exchange of prisoners, the grain corridor and the like, as is UN Secretary General António Guterres. They both talk about negotiations, but realize that their time has not yet come.
Turkey benefits from supporting Ukraine
As Yunus noted, the Kremlin is well aware of the cooperation between Ukraine and Turkey in the military-technical and humanitarian spheres. This is happening because Ankara considers cooperation with Kyiv important and beneficial.
If Turkey considers something important for its foreign policy and national interests, then it will continue to do so. Ukraine is a military-strategic partner of Turkey. Nothing happened so that Turkey had to change its military-political doctrine, Yunus noted
Erdogan spoke to Putin and then to Zelensky.
- On January 5, the President of Turkey had a telephone conversation with dictator Putin. Erdogan stressed that calls for peace and negotiations must be backed up by a unilateral ceasefire and a fair settlement of differences.
- According to Yaroslav Bozhko, head of the Doctrine Center for Political Studies, it is beneficial for Erdogan to maintain mediation between Ukraine and Russia in order to play the role of a regional leader.
- On the same day, January 5, Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a telephone conversation with Vladimir Zelensky.
