On November 7, the wives of Russian conscripts went to a rally in Moscow. About 30 women demanded that the Russian authorities return their men home. They plan to hold the next protests in about 20 regions.

Russian oppositionist, political strategist, gallery owner Marat Gelman told Channel 24 that this movement can grow while the war is going on in Ukraine. Moreover, it may turn out to be a more effective force than the Russian opposition.

Non-political opposition is growing

Russian authorities are accustomed to the fact that any political movement can either be bought or discredited.

During the Second Chechen War in Russia, the movement of mothers of soldiers played an important role, because it could not be bought or discredited. There is nothing that could be given to a mother that would have the same value as her son’s life,” the political strategist noted.

It is quite possible that such seemingly weak structures as the movement of mobilized squads will turn out to be stronger than political parties or oligarchs.

We should not rely on the political opponents of Vladimir Putin, because people in such harsh conditions will not risk their lives for the ideas of freedom and democracy.

“When they talk about a specific form of protest, it is quite possible that this will work to undermine the situation in Russia,” Marat Gelman emphasized.

What is known about the movement of wives mobilized in Russia

  • On November 7, in the center of Moscow, the wives of Russians mobilized in the fall of 2022 gathered for a rally. They demanded that their men be returned home and their conditions of service improved.
  • In particular, the wives of those mobilized from Vologda recorded a video in which they reported that their men were sent to the offensive in the Donetsk region without “equipment and training.” Two Russian soldiers were killed and 10 were injured.
  • The women are also planning to hold larger protests. One of the tentative dates is November 19. Rallies can take place in more than 20 regions of Russia, including Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, and the Chelyabinsk region. Rallies in Moscow and the region are scheduled for another date.
