Pavel Podvig, a senior researcher at the UN Institute for the Study of Disarmament and the Russian Nuclear Weapons Project, told 24 Channel that the West is in no hurry to check the reliability of Russian nuclear systems.

He noted that in Russia, divisions of the state company Rosatom are engaged in the development of nuclear weapons. In the Ministry of Defense, a serious structure is responsible for the operation of warheads – 12 Main Directorate. This is a fairly powerful institution that was formed back in the 1940s – 1950s.

The nuclear arsenal, namely nuclear parts and warheads, are maintained in working order and in proper readiness. The tradition of a responsible attitude towards the maintenance of nuclear weapons exists, and there is no particular doubt about it, the senior researcher emphasized.

At the same time, it can be assumed that nuclear weapons, like any the system is prone to malfunctions, and there is no absolute certainty that it will always work well. However, the reliability of such systems, in particular missiles, is at the level of 95 – 98%. Regarding the state of warheads, the indicator will be the same.

Even if we imagine that this indicator will be 50% or even 25%, then it will not be enough for anyone it will seem. One cannot count on the fact that some components of this system will turn out to be less reliable than one might imagine, he noted.

That is why no one in the West does not want to check whether Russia's nuclear weapons are really in such a state.
