Near the city of Malatya, located in Eastern Turkey, there was a new powerful earthquake. Its magnitude was 5.6.
The Turkish Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the tragedy occurred on February 27. Local time then was approximately 12 hours, that is, 11 in Kiev, informs Channel 24 .
What is known about the earthquake
According to the Office for the Elimination of Consequences of Emergency Situations (AFAD), the epicenter of the earthquake was the Yeshilyurt region of Malatya.
The earthquake, which was also felt in nearby provinces, hit at a depth of 6.96 kilometers, AFAD said.
The earthquake was felt in Malatya, as well as in neighboring provinces: Kahramanmaras, Gaziantep, Adiyaman and Sanliurfa.
According to the AA, some of the damaged buildings in Malatya suffered damage as a result of the earthquake. Moreover, it is known that after the tremors, citizens gathered in the squares.
AFAD writes that as a result of an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 in the Yeshilyurt region of Malatia, buildings were destroyed and search and rescue teams were sent to the region.
According to VolcanoDiscovery, the earthquake sounded for:
- 8 kilometers from Yesilyurt;
- 14 – from Malatya;
- 58 – from Kakhta;
- 152 – from Gaziantep;
- 505 (approximately 314 miles) from Ankara, the capital of Turkey.

President of the Turkish Emergency Directorate (AFAD) Yunus Sezer said that as a result of the earthquake, 1 person was previously killed and 69 were injured.

Turkish Minister of National Education Mahmut Ozer said that according to preliminary data, 22 buildings were destroyed.
We hospitalized 20 of our citizens. We rescued 5 of our citizens from the rubble,” the minister said.
He also assured that rescue work is ongoing.

Consequences of earthquakes in Turkey
Since the night of February 6, Turkey has been rocked by earthquakes. Then Malatya also suffered. As of February 25, the number of victims exceeded 50 thousand people:
- Turkey: AFAD reported that the death toll had risen to 44,218. In total, there were 7,930 tremors. More than 448 thousand citizens were evacuated;
- in Syria: The UN and the Syrian government have previously said that more than 5,914 people have died in Syria. However, most of the victims (4500) were found in the northwest, which is kept by the rebels.
Unfortunately, on February 21, a seismologist warned of more earthquakes in Turkey. Doctor of Geology Nachi Geryur said that it is in the direction of Adana that energy from previous earthquakes can be released. So residents of the city are urged to be careful.
