New level of terror: Lukashenko's regime has begun to take revenge on the relatives of political prisoners Dzvenislava Moshovskaya

The self-proclaimed president of Belarus is preparing for the “elections” scheduled for early 2025. Because of this, terror in the state has significantly increased, but the situation there is generally very difficult. Alexander Lukashenko does not stop filling Belarusian prisons with political prisoners.

The chairperson of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya told Channel 24 about this, noting that in Belarus they imprison for anything: participation in the 2020 protests, old photographs of the red and white flag, correspondence. She stressed that even solidarity with political prisoners or caring for their children could lead to arrest.

A New Level of Repression

Svetlana Tikhanovskaya noted that a new level of terror had begun in Belarus before the elections.

Up to two hundred people are detained every day. Officially, there are 1,400 political prisoners in Belarus, but in reality there are many more. Relatives are openly afraid to say that there is a political prisoner in their family, because the regime is taking revenge on relatives, she said.

Those detained for not recognizing Lukashenko's power are held in inhumane conditions, they are tortured, and they are not given any medical care.

“This indicates that the regime feels weak and is afraid that protests will happen again. More than 4 years have passed, but Lukashenko continues to act as if hundreds of thousands of Belarusians are still standing outside his palace,” the chairwoman of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus noted.

Pardon political prisoners

According to Tikhanovskaya, the situation with political prisoners in Belarus is only getting worse. Lukashenko is using them as hostages.

He seems to be releasing dozens of people to create the appearance of humanity, but at this time, security forces are detaining 2-3 times more people than have been “pardoned,” she emphasized.

By the way, self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced his intention to run in the “elections” in 2025, emphasizing that the difficult situation only strengthens his desire to stay in power. At the same time, he cynically claimed that the elections in Belarus are the most honest in the world, despite numerous international accusations of falsifications.
