Karl Negammer announced that he will resign as Federal Chancellor of Austria and leader of the conservative Austrian People's Party in the coming days.

The politician announced this decision on his Twitter account.

Resignation of the Chancellor

– An agreement on important core issues turned out to be impossible. In the next few days, I will step down as Federal Chancellor and as leader of the People's Party and will promote an orderly transition,” Negammer said.

The Chancellor stressed that an “orderly transition” is important, and emphasized his commitment to stability both in Germany and in the People's Party.

The politician explained that the ÖVP had held long and honest negotiations with the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), but had failed to reach an agreement on key issues.

He added that the ÖVP does not support initiatives against benefits and business, and is also against the introduction of new taxes.

“Therefore, we have stopped negotiations with the SDPA and will not continue them,” Negammer concluded.

Earlier it was reported that the far-right Freedom Party won the parliamentary elections in Austria in September 2024, receiving about 29% of the vote.

However, due to the inability to form a coalition, Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen entrusted this mission to the current Chancellor Karl Negammer.
