Negotiations on unblocking Ukrainian grain are underway in Istanbul

by alex

Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia on unblocking Ukrainian ports for grain exports. The talks are being held with the participation of representatives of the UN and Turkey.

During the talks, the parties will try to “break the deadlock on grain exports.” After all, Russia has blocked Ukrainian ports, and our state cannot export products. Ukraine has also planted minefields to prevent attacks from the sea.

At the same time, Ukraine is an important exporter of wheat and grains such as barley and corn. It also supplied nearly half of all sunflower oil sold on world markets. And the blockade of ports after the Russian military invasion led to a sharp increase in food prices. And millions of people were on the brink of starvation. Because of this, the UN sounded the alarm.

This is the first talks with the participation of representatives of Ukraine and Russia since March 29. Then they also went to Turkey. But Russia failed to end the war.

The problem in the negotiation process is Russia's demands. Among them is the right to “search ships to avoid smuggling weapons.” And also the fact that Russia itself is trying to take out the looted grain by ships from the Ukrainian ports that were under occupation.

Turkey claims that there are about 20 merchant ships in the region that can be quickly loaded and sent to world markets.

The UN plan calls for ships to follow safe “corridors” between known mine locations.

Experts say clearing the Black Sea is a complex operation that could take months – too long to overcome the growing global food crisis.
