In the wake of damage to submarine cables connecting Estonia and Finland, NATO discussed the security of critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. In this regard, the Alliance decided to strengthen its military presence in the region.

Other measures to counter potential threats to critical underwater infrastructure are also currently being considered. This was reported by 24 Channel with reference to a statement by the North Atlantic Alliance published on the official website.

What is known about the increased NATO presence

The cable damage, which is being investigated by the Finnish authorities, is one of a number of recent incidents in the Baltic Sea considered as possible acts of sabotage. Members of the Alliance expressed full solidarity with Estonia and Finland in connection with the recent incident.

In order to maintain vigilance, increase situational awareness and prevent future incidents, NATO is increasing its military presence in the Baltic Sea. The Alliance members are also considering other measures to counter potential threats to critical underwater infrastructure, the report says.

In particular, such measures are being considered with the support of the NATO Maritime Centre for Undersea Critical Infrastructure Security, which was established in May 2024. Interestingly, the Eagle S tanker, which is part of the so-called Russian shadow fleet, is suspected of damaging cables in the Gulf of Finland.

Recall that the police had previously detained the tanker. The crew, which consists of citizens of Georgia and India, is being interrogated. High-tech listening and recording equipment was found on the vessel itself, which Russia could have used for espionage.
