NATO has taken over control of Poland's air defense from the US, an important step in supporting Ukraine, says CNN's Sergei Popovich

A few days before the inauguration of newly elected US President Donald Trump, NATO took over control of air defense in Poland from the US military. The move raises questions about the Trump administration's future strategy toward NATO and Ukraine.

According to NATO spokesman Colonel Martin O'Donnell, command was transferred on Thursday. This was reported by 24 Kanal, citing CNN.

What could such a decision indicate?

NATO has taken over control of air defenses in Poland from the United States, giving the alliance the ability to protect key logistics hubs in Poland that are critical to the delivery of military aid to Ukraine.

The change is part of a longer-term effort to shift responsibility for supporting Ukraine from the United States to European allies amid uncertainty about future US policy.

Allies are bracing for a possible reduction in US support for Ukraine next year. Donald Trump has repeatedly questioned the importance of aid to Ukraine and the US role in NATO. While he has pledged to stop the war, it is unclear whether his administration will continue to provide military support to Kyiv.

Amid this uncertainty, the Biden administration is working to strengthen Ukraine on the battlefield and ensure it has a strong negotiating position. In particular, the US announced a new $500 million aid package. NATO is also gradually taking over functions from the US-led Security Assistance Group-Ukraine (SAG-U), which coordinated the supply of weapons and equipment to Kyiv.

The last meeting of the US-led Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) was held by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin at Ramstein Air Base. He called on allies to continue supporting Ukraine.

The coalition in support of Ukraine must not tremble. It must not falter. And it must not fail, Austin noted.

Recall that Zelensky said that as a result of Ramstein, Ukraine will receive new “very serious air defense systems”.
