Russian President Vladimir Putin has again threatened a nuclear strike. The West has warned Russia about the consequences if the country's leadership decides to use weapons of mass destruction.
The Russians know what consequences they expect from the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke about this.
How Putin's threats are perceived
NATO has not said exactly how they might react if Russia uses weapons of mass destruction.
The likelihood of any use of nuclear weapons is still low, but the potential consequences of this are so great that we, accordingly, must take these threats seriously,” the Secretary General added.
Catastrophic consequences for Russia
Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the President's Office, said the nuclear states should publicly explain to Russia the consequences of nuclear threats. If Russia strikes Ukraine, then other states will respond to it to destroy nuclear launch sites. According to Podolyak, the analytical potential of Putin's entourage is now extremely low and the state leadership does not understand all the risks of their actions.
Russia's impunity for nuclear threats means the destruction of the principle that nuclear weapons can only be used for defense, when survival of the country.
