NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg/NATO

This was announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference in Brussels, before the Ramstein III meeting of defense ministers. He noted that partners have provided Ukraine with billions of dollars worth of weapons, and this process continues. p class=”bloquote cke-markup”>I expect that at the summit, NATO allies will agree on a comprehensive assistance package for Ukraine to help Ukraine in the long term with the goal of transitioning from Soviet-era weapons to modern NATO weapons, as well as to improve interoperability with NATO. – said the Secretary General of the Alliance.

Already after the Ramstein-3 meeting, Interfax-Ukraine writes, Stoltenberg stressed that Russia's war in Ukraine is the biggest security threat in recent decades, so the reaction should be longer time.

Madrid summit will be the summit of transformation

At the NATO summit in Madrid, Stoltenberg hopes to make decisions that will make the organization even stronger. The Secretary General says that this summit can be called a “transformation summit”.

On what issues decisions can be made:

  • As for the policy of stronger deterrence and defense.

  • Regarding continued support for Ukraine and partners at risk.
  • Regarding the new NATO Strategic Concept, which will set out the position towards Russia and China.
  • On membership applications from Sweden and Finland.

Stoltenberg met with Reznikov

Stoltenberg also spoke about his meeting with Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov. The Secretary General noted that Ukraine receives unprecedented support to defend itself against Russia.

Results of the Ramstein-3 meeting in Brussels:

  • The United States announced an increase in military assistance to Ukraine. We are talking about 155-mm cannons, HIMARS missile systems, Harpoon anti-ship systems.
  • Artillery should come from Canada, Poland and the Netherlands, and helicopters from Slovakia.
  • Germany promised multiple launch rocket systems.
  • American General Mark Milley noted that HIMARS systems will reach Ukraine at the end of June. The crews have already completed the necessary training.
  • NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said earlier that a new military aid package for Ukraine should be agreed at the end of June. It will be agreed exactly at the NATO summit in Madrid.
