NATO summit: allies will strengthen Ukrainian air defense and begin sending F-16s
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan noted that at the NATO summit, which began on July 9 in Washington, participants will discuss strengthening Ukraine's air defense, as well as the long-awaited delivery of F-16 fighter jets to it.
Sullivan emphasized that this issue will be one of the priorities on the sidelines of the summit, since the whole world witnessed the brutal shelling of Ukrainian cities by Russia, where children died, just the day before.
—I think what we have seen in recent days demonstrates the need to increase our support for Ukraine, — NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg supported the position of his colleague.
Zelensky thanked for support
President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky thanked the partner countries for the confirmation of commitments and concrete results of the first working day of the NATO summit in Washington.
— We thank our partners—the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Romania—for adopting a powerful Declaration in support of Ukraine's air defense system to protect its people, cities, and critical infrastructure.
Additional Patriot, SAMP/T and IRIS-T SLM air defense systems, as well as other tactical missile systems due to arrive to Ukraine from partners, will help destroy Russian drones and missiles and better protect Ukrainians from Russian aerial terror, such as yesterday’s brutal attack on our main children’s hospital,” he emphasized.
Shelling of Ukraine July 8 — what is known
On July 8, several cities of Ukraine, including Kyiv, were subjected to massive attacks by Russians.
In the capital, an occupying missile hit the Okhmatdyt medical center, where children with serious illnesses came from all over the country for treatment.
Russian attack resulted in civilian casualties — in Kyiv alone, 33 people died and more than 100 were wounded.
