NATO announces nuclear deterrence exercise amid Putin's 'veiled threats'

Russia has repeatedly threatened Ukraine and the world with nuclear weapons. NATO is convinced that the answer to the aggressor will be decisive.

The NATO Secretary General at a briefing on October 11 said that the Alliance is “closely watching” Russia's nuclear forces. NATO will hold its annual nuclear deterrence exercise next week, he said.

Vladimir Putin's “veiled nuclear threats” were “dangerous and irresponsible” and the Kremlin knew nuclear war “cannot be win.” We are closely monitoring Russia's nuclear forces. We have not noticed any changes in Russia's position, but we remain attentive,” Stoltenberg said.

He stressed that the exercises that the Alliance will have were planned long before the attack on Ukraine. They must ensure the effectiveness of NATO's nuclear deterrence forces.

NATO ready for defense

NATO Secretary General said that the Alliance has doubled the number of battlegroups in the east. They may also be increased in the future.

Allies are also tightening security around key installations and stepping up intelligence and data sharing. We will take further measures to strengthen our resilience and protect our critical infrastructure, and there will be a single and decisive response to a deliberate attack on the critical infrastructure of allies, Stoltenberg said.

He added that when Ukraine succeeds on the front, Russia resorts to indiscriminate attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure.

“President Putin started this war. He must end it by withdrawing his forces from Ukraine. And President Lukashenko must stop Belarus' complicity in this illegal conflict,” Stoltenberg stressed.

Ukraine and NATO

October 4, Stoltenberg received an application for Ukraine's entry into NATO. Subsequently, it will be considered at the level of the North Atlantic Council. Igor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Office of the President, told about this.
