NATO agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035

NATO leaders have committed to spending 5% of their GDP annually on defence and security by 2035.

The Guardian writes about this, citing the declaration adopted at the NATO summit in The Hague.

NATO member countries pledge to spend 5% of GDP

The declaration says North Atlantic Treaty Organization members will submit annual plans that demonstrate “a credible, progressive path toward achieving this goal,” with a more complete review of progress made in 2029.

The five-point declaration also includes a line reaffirming the 32 countries' “unwavering commitment to collective defense, as enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which states that an attack on one is an attack on all.”

The document includes a line promising continued support for Ukraine, noting that its “security contributes to our security.”

“Allies reaffirm their continued sovereign commitment to support Ukraine, whose security contributes to our security, and to this end will include direct contributions to Ukraine’s defence and its defence industry in NATO members’ defence expenditure estimates,” the third point of the declaration says.

The document does not directly condemn Russia. However, there is a separate line about the “long-term threat that Russia poses to Euro-Atlantic security.”

It is also noted that NATO leaders are looking forward to the next meeting in Turkey in 2026, and then in Albania.

Let us recall that the NATO summit in The Hague is taking place over two days, June 24-25, with the participation of leaders of about 40 states.
