Mysterious underground graves found in Egypt

by alex

An underground cache has been found in the ancient Egyptian necropolis of Saqqara, which contains at least 13 wooden coffins, 2,500 years old. This is reported by Science Alert.

The mysterious grave was found in a burial shaft at a depth of 11 meters. The sealed and well-preserved coffins, which most likely still contain the bodies of the dead, were stacked one on top of the other. Some of the coffins have retained the remains of the paint on the wood.

Archaeologists also report three sealed niches in the mine, which may contain even more graves.

Saqqara served as the necropolis of Memphis, the capital of ancient Egypt. For about three thousand years, the Egyptians buried the dead here, including people from the working class and high-ranking officials. However, many graves have been plundered over the millennium, so the discovery of an untouched cache leaves a chance for finding burial utensils and remains that could expand knowledge of ancient Egyptian funerary customs.
