Moscow's last chance for escalation: Russia will lose its influence in Moldova

by alex

Russia wants to destabilize the situation in Moldova. But its capabilities are now stagnating and will gradually decrease.

Political scientist Oleg Sahakyan told Channel 24 about this. According to him, Russian influences in Moldova are now very serious and colossal, but they are stagnating. And the more Moscow will raise the degree, the less its influence will decrease.

Some of those who are oriented towards Moscow are much less willing to take tougher steps than Moscow. They understand that they will have to clean it up and it is they who need to take risks – starting from their reputation, and ending with their lives, – Sahakyan noted.

Also, both Ukraine and Romania are interested in the fact that Russia failed to destabilize the situation in Moldova. In this case, both the EU and NATO take these threats much more seriously after an all-out war. Given these factors, Russian influence in Moldova will fade. But the danger exists

They won't sit back. All this creates a narrow window of opportunity for Russia to try to squeeze the last thing they can and turn the situation in Moldova so that it becomes their asset,” Sahakyan stressed.

Does Russia use troops from Transnistria

Sahakyan doubts that there will be an intensification of hostilities with the participation of the Russian contingent located in Transnistria. This grouping is effective as a kind of scarecrow for Moldova itself, and not as a serious military force.

They look like a dangling sword of Damocles. They are not yet involved, that is, a much more serious factor for the internal political destabilization of Moldova in the hands of pro-Russian forces. Sahakyan emphasized.

In the case of attracting troops from Transnistria, Moldova will be able to ask for help from Ukraine. Yes, and Kyiv in this case, and without a request, will be able to take certain actions. The level of support from other countries will also change drastically.

The situation in Moldova: in brief

  • Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky warned his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu about the plans of the Russian special services for a coup in Moldova.
  • Also, Sandu also stated that Ukraine has the right to strike at Transnistria in order to prevent an offensive from the occupied territory of Moldova.
  • From March 14, WizzAir suspends flights to and from the capital of Moldova. All because of “risks in the airspace” over Chisinau.
