More than 60% of Ukrainians who went abroad because of the war do not plan to return in the near future

Most Ukrainian refugees who went abroad because of the war with Russia hope to return home. But because of the fighting, about two-thirds expect to stay abroad until Ukraine becomes safer.

The mood of Ukrainians who fled abroad because of the war is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

According to the poll, 65% of Ukrainians plan to stay in the country they left at the beginning of a full-scale war. Another 9% of respondents plan to move to another country next month.

According to the results of the UN survey, the decisions of Ukrainians are most influenced by:

  • security;
  • family ties;
  • access to the labor market.

Important. 70% of Ukrainians surveyed left Ukraine with someone (most often – close relatives). 77% of respondents stated that they have higher or vocational education, as well as work experience.

According to the survey, 16% of respondents plan to return to Ukraine in the next two months. Immediately, 15% plan to stay in Ukraine temporarily to visit their families, pick up the necessary things or help relatives evacuate.

According to the survey results, 82% of respondents were forced to leave at least one close family member in Ukraine.

40% of respondents who expressed their desire to return to Ukraine planned to do so next month. At the same time, the plans of Ukrainian refugees differ depending on:

  • the region where they lived before the start of the war;
  • the time elapsed since the move;
  • the country they left for.

Higher the share among those planning to return is observed among refugees from Kyiv and areas in western Ukraine. On the other hand, refugees who left the east and north of the country are in no hurry to return to Ukraine.

More often Ukrainian refugees want to move to Germany

Among Ukrainians who plan to stay in the country in which they are currently located , more than the average part of the people:

  • taking care of children or elderly relatives who left with them;
  • those who left in the early days of the invasion;
  • living in provided housing or renting housing on their own.

Among Ukrainian refugees who plan to change their host country, a large proportion of those who have recently left or live in refugee accommodation centers.

Most often, such people want to move to Germany (33%), the Czech Republic (7%) or Canada (5%).
